The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

Okay so I just got back from seeing Disney’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and I present to you the movie review. This movie is definitely Disney with its humor, relationships, and the characters. Disney does a good job creating a movie that really the whole family can enjoy from its back story to the magic on the screen.

As far as the humor goes, it is funny. It has numerous quirky moments in which the main character, a big nerd, tries to fit in as well as do magic. (Both tasks he does not do well). Most of the humor is poking fun of the main character, but Disney also mixes in the humor with the magical battles. Overall you get a movie that has nice action sequences especially the magical aspect along with comedy.

The relationships in the movie are also nice from the father son role of the master and student to the love interest relationships. This is one of the first Disney movies that I can recall when not a lot of emphasis was placed on his biological or adopted parents. This movie mainly focuses on the main character’s relationship with his teacher, which takes on his “parental” role. However Disney does show many parallels between Nicholas Cage’s character, Balthazar, being Merlin’s apprentice and the main character being Balthazar’s apprentice.

The characters you can’t help but like, or dislike. The good guys have either been labeled a nerd and picked on or had to endure centuries of searching for the apprentice while pining for his love. Things that are supposed to be relatable and understandable, as well as the bad guys being bad simply because they are. Disney at least tried to flesh out a characters rather than simply compose random people together for no reason.

Overall this movie is worth seeing. It is definitely a Disney take on magic its like a live version of the movie Fantasia in parts. And in many ways its reminiscent of Hocus Pocus, except the main characters aren’t defenseless.
