Beyonce and Jay-Z welcomed a baby girl earlier this month. Following the tradition of most Hollywood celebs, the two named their daughter Blue Ivy Carter. The name holds significance to both mom and dad. Blue is the color most often associated with Jay-Z, i.e. all of the Blueprint albums. And well Beyonce was born Sept. 4 and Jay-Z was Dec. 4 and the two were wed on April 4. 4 is also the title of Bey’s new album. Showing that the powerhouse couple could put their creative minds to work they came up with Ivy because of the Roman numeral for 4 (IV). The proud papa also created a song for his first child. The song, “Glory”, can be heard on Jay-Z’s website LifeandTimes.com.

Totallyrandomhobbies.com would like to wish the happy Carter family the best! Welcome to the world Blue Ivy!

Here are a few of the proud mama’s songs that I personally enjoy.

Do your thing B!!

These are all accredited authors who are writing about authors’ works. My Review of the Literature I Read:

This week I was able to read The Help by Kathryn Stockett. This 400 page novel consist of Stockett recreated the 1960s in which black women are maids for white women in a racially tense environment, all under the backdrop of Jackson, Mississippi. This novel is supposed to be the idea of the help finding their voice and giving their opinions about the subservient mentality. The book is partly written in dialect, although it is not done well, to give a specific voice to their characters. However the biggest problem with the book is that it is called the help, but the protagonist of the novel is a white woman who is writing the novel. This is a disconnect from what the book is supposed to do and what it is actually about. Although many people loved and praised this novel, I actually found a issues with it that were unsettling.

I was also able to read Fiction 100: An Anthology of Short Fiction (13th Edition) edited by James H. Pickering. This is a collection of short stories that span through the years. If you are looking for some of the most popular short stories from now and throughout this century check this one out. It also contains biographies of the authors in the back, which is always rewarding. I have not read every story in the piece, but I can say what I have read is very well written literature.

My Review of What I Read:

This week I was able to read The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien. This is a novel that is written in a memoir style in which Tim O’Brien is a character inside the text. However don’t be fooled by this collection of short stories, because it is all fiction. His is an army veteran that recreates a scene of war that is so realistic with the sequences, the characters, the reaction that one can’t help be pulled inside. Don’t pass up this read. Whether you enjoy reading about soldiers or military, there is universality that about this work that can be appreciated by all.

I was also able to read The Moviegoer by Walker Percy. This is a novel in which the main character loves to go to the movies. He is noticed that the mundane found in life can only be broken by tragic events and from these event we, as humans, grow. He tries to find some escapes in life in movies and yet he feels movies are not an accurate portrayal of life. A handsome guy, who’s intelligent and rich, and yet is bored with life. It is an interesting view into what people really want out of life and surprisingly, it’s not always success.

My Review of What I Read:

This week I was able to read Witch & Wizard by James Patterson. This is a young adult series started by Patterson that celebrates the young adult. In the series two teenagers, Wisty and Whit, are a witch and wizard that are destined to change this world that is ruled by fear and all creative thought have been exiled. The narration is constantly jumping between the two siblings giving them distinct voices as well characters. If you are able to jump into this world, undoubtedly a critique on our own, then the novel actually transcends the realm of young adults. Many of the elements in this book celebrate (besides youth) creativity and individuality, two things easily relatable to all ages.

I was also able to read The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat As Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade by Peter Weiss. This work is actually a play. The most interesting thing about this play is the fact that it is a play within a play or “metatheatre.” This play is somewhat difficult to read until you realize the effect of having inmates of an asylum play characters in a play. In other words there are actors who are pretending to be inmates in an insane asylum who are playing characters in a play. Out of the two main characters one has narcolepsy and the other is a rapist. The play is most known for its most disturbing scene at the end of the play in which the inmates begin viciously raping and attacking the people in the audience that are watching the play. The entire time the play makes you aware that you are watching a play, one of the powerful tricks of metatheatre.

Straw Dogs

Okay so I just got back from seeing the movie Straw Dogs. This whole movie is set in a small rural county in Mississippi; interestingly enough there seems to be a lack of racial discrimination present and interesting tweak to the usual understanding of the south. Rather the movie is about a young, newly married couple that moves to this town and their adjustment/acceptance into this community.

The Original:

Out of all the characters in this movie, the only one you really like the entire time is the husband. He seems to be consistently normal. He wants to enjoy the town with his wife, he simply wants to work on his work, and he wants to avoid confrontation with the locals. Most of the time you find yourself stepping to into his shoes and you slowly watching things fall apart around him. As far as the rest of the characters, the wife included, there are just so many traits that come across dislikable. From the erratic tempers, strange customs, and animalistic sexuality, it simply just paints small country town as horrible, disgusting people.

Here’s the preview:

The plot of the movie is very straight forward, a no nonsensical way of telling the story. You know why they characters are there, the wife’s father has died, the husband wants to write, and it’s the wife’s hometown. And ultimately you know that the people in the town know everything about what’s going on. The protagonist is doomed from the start. He will have to fight, or he will die. (Like I said before, no nonsense.)

So is this movie worth seeing? There are some literary elements inert into this movie. The main character does have a change, certain people in the movie only represent an idea rather than a person, and the title straw dogs (when things no longer have a use they get tossed aside or burned). However it is a deeply disturbing movie that lacks people with moral fibers, the elements that usually make up a small town. There are so many secrets that it is mind boggling. The acting in the movie along with what the movie tries to represent, would make me give it a 3 out 5 stars.

Upcoming Movies:

1911 (limited) 10/7

Blackthorn (limited) 10/7

Dirty Girl (limited) 10/7

Real Steel 10/7

The Human Centipede Part 2 10/7

The Way 10/7

New To Me

I had posted the video to the first episode, just check the blog roll in case you missed it, but here’s episode two. This little web series seems to be one of the best representations, so far, of the Mortal Kombat Saga. Usually they try to incorporate too much into each movie, so I think this series was really refreshing. It seems to have a nice flow and more accuracy and explanation that seems to be lacking in movies/shows. This person seems like a fan who actually played the game and can accurately names the characters and their back story. For once it seems like the “big businesses” are listening to the fans.

Mortal Kombat

Although this section will probably not be updated as much as I like since I always seem to miss everything on TV nowadays, but still here’s something I found by accident on the internet. Here is a new web series called: Mortal Kombat Legacy, its supposed to be a twelve part series that is leading up to the release of the new Mortal Kombat game. If you’re an old fan like me of the video game and the movies (the mistakes and all), then this series may be something you’re really interested in.
