In case you missed the top 12 of American Idol tonight the performances ranged from outstanding to mediocre. Tonight’s theme was the Rolling Stones. While I personally am not familiar with their music, American Idol decided to throw the contestants right in there and see how well they do. Michael “Big Mike” Lynche started the show. In his film, the audience learned that the talented gentle giant’s mother is dead, which could be the reason why he chose to sing “Miss You”. He had the crowd on their feet and when he was done singing, the judges had nothing but good comments for Idol’s proud new papa.

The next singer up was Miss Didi Benami. She told how, as the middle child, she was the most artistic and dreamy, while her mother said when she was born she screamed “bloody murder”. She chose the song “Play With Fire”. To me, this was the best that Didi has ever sounded on the American Idol stage. The judges had nothing but rave reviews for her, with Ellen noting that she “liked the way she [Didi] made fire into two syllables”.
After Didi came Casey James, the boy that Cara is crushing over. This Texan has a whole family of people that play guitar, he he claims that he’s the worst one. (Though there are probably plenty of girls that would argue with him about that). Interestingly enough he was born they thought he may never talk due a medical problem with his brain. He sung “It’s All Over Now,” giving his country twang to it. Most of the comments were positive, with Ellen bordering with a hilarious lesbian joke that ended in blond. Simon of course still wants more.
Next up came little Miss Lacey Brown, another Texan that is the daughter of preacher man. She entered singing “Ruby Tuesday,” although the last note was questionable. She was okay, though definitely not one of the greats of the night. There was mixed reviews from the judges on this, with Simon saying that she was “overthinking it.” (And by the way what was she wearing? A black skirt, floral print shirt over a black stripped one sleeved shirt???)

Andrew Garcia was the next to take on the Rolling Stones. This time not focusing on the gang related background for him, he talks more about him learning guitar and the fact that his Dad plays it too. Rhythmically he was a little off, but he still has voice that is to be heard, while singing “Give Me Shelter.” Although he received a “best performance yet” the other three judges were disappointed especially with his lost connection with the song.
Along came Katie Stevens from Connecticut, with a darling clip from her past with her and her brother singing “From This Moment.” She decided on “Wild Horses” (which is an awesome song if you’ve never heard it), which started out a little shakey but she was able to pull it together. And the judges seemed to follow this, by Cara saying she is “never technically perfect, but better than last week.”
After here came Tim Urban, and we learned he has nine siblings (4 brothers and 5 sisters). He started playing guitar around 15 or 16 and he decided on giving “Under My Thumb” a reggae vibe. Randy didn’t like it. Ellen simply thought she should have been on a beach with a Pina Colada. Cara and Simon said at least he tried to make it original. (For me, not knowing the original it sounded rather interesting. But I’ve never heard the original so I have nothing to base it on.)
Along came Siobhan Magnus with her huge family, expressing her using music with her father as a way to relax herself. This Machatuchettes girl sung “Painted Black.” And did a wonderful job with it. All the judges were in agreement thinking it was defintely one of the best of the night. Though dark and slightly creepy, it still was worth hearing.

Lee Dewyze followed her, mentioning his starting in a paint store and living check to check. (Oh, the sad life of the college student). He mentions his wavering nerves and how his own parents couldn’t look at him to sing. He decided on “Beast of Burden.” Although he has a good voice, he will fall into the category of another singer I can’t understand. I like them, but I have no idea what they are singing. Randy mentioned him being a mixture of Rob Thomas and Dave Matthew, and Simon just wanted him to have a moment.
Paige Miles came next. This Florida girl got her start in church and we also found out that she lost her paraplegic father at the age of four. She decided on “Honky Tonk Woman.” Her voice was rather nice, even if she missed a few notes. But that could be excused when Ellen pointed out that she had had problems with her voice (Laryngitis, the silent but deadly musical career breaker).
Aaron Kelly was up after Paige and we learn that he was adopted. He decided on the song “Angie” in which he did a decent job with. Ellen mentioned he was copying her hairstyle, (which they could have been twins that night.) Simon thought it was 100 percent the right song.
Crystal Bowersox when next and we learned that she started writing at the age of ten. (This girl was just destined for greatness.) She sang “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” The judges liked the fact that she added in personality but was just okay with vocals. Simon thought she was getting too comfortable with the competition and now Siobhan has stepped up. However Crystal responded with “I don’t think I got it, but thank you for saying it.”
In a nutshell my fave was Siobhan, she’s hitting the Adam Lambert notes. My co-author’s fave was Crystal, that girl is just naturally talented, just waiting on her to start singing the telephone book. And Paige was still good this week, even with the silent killer Laryngitis. But the worst, and probably one for the bottom three would probably be Lacey Brown. But that was American Idol 360. What do you think?
